New York’s Statue of Liberty’s full name is “Liberty Enlightening the World” and she was a gift to the U.S. from the people of France.

Designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, she is modeled after the Roman goddess of liberty, Libertas. Since 1886, she’s lit the way into New York Bay, but during her construction, both Philadelphia and Boston offered to fund the project in return for her relocation to their cities. Luckily New York won out and she has been an icon of the city ever since.
