A must see Hudson Valley destination! This historic cabin in Esopus, New York was built in 1895 by the famous naturalist, John Burroughs, as a woodland retreat where he could connect directly with the surrounding natural environment. Burroughs was a leading figure in conservation and nature appreciation at a time when industrialization was driving millions into the city. Here at Slabsides, he not only wrote some of his most famous essays on nature, but also entertained notable figures like Teddy Roosevelt, John Muir, Thomas Edison, and Henry Ford. Today, you can visit the site and also hike a network of trails around the area.
