This Revolutonary War site was built in 1779, while the war in full swing throughout New York State.

Colonel Levi Pauling was ordered to build this fort on the county’s northwest frontier. He constructed this now lost site outside the Catskill town of Phoenicia, New York to prevent attacks by Indians and Tories.

Pauling built a log fort here because it could also command the most direct route across the mountain and defend Kingston.

Colonel Johannis Snyder commanded the fort until the end of the Revolutionary War.
