In 1731, Charles Clinton settled here at this historic site in the Little Britain area of New Windsor, New York after having emigrated from Ireland.

At this site was born two of Charles’ famous sons:

  • James Clinton (1736-1812) Major General in the Revolutionary War
  • George Clinton (1739-1812) US Founding Father, brigadier general, US Vice President, and Governor of New York

The Clinton Homestead was also the childhood home of James Clinton’s son, Dewitt Clinton (1769-1828), a US Senator, New York City mayor, and sixth Governor of New York.

In 1874, the Clinton Homestead and its four adjoining structure were all torn down. Today, a monument marks the site.
