Once opened 365 days a year and 24 hours a day, the Red Apple Rest was a popular stop for people traveling from New York City to then well attended getaways in the Catskills. The cafeteria style restaurant even became a popular hang for comedians who’d go over their acts, describe the audiences, and gather gossip along the Catskill comedy circuit. With the demise of Catskill tourism and the creation the New York State Thruway, the Red Apple Rest saw its business dwindle and by 2006 it was permanently closed. Since then, it has slowly been fading away, but with Resorts World Catskills casino having recently opened and the upcoming Legoland planned for nearby in Goshen, prospects have begun to look a little bit brighter for this old site to be revived.
